After waiting for more than 20 years, the United Nations General Assembly adopted, on 29 June 2007 by a vote of 143 to 4 with 11 abstentions, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The declaration spells out the fundamental rights of indigenous peoples including their rights to their traditional lands and resources, language, culture and spiritual beliefs, among others.
