Summary

The Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities was adopted by General Assembly on December 1992.

It was inspired by the provisions of article 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights concerning the rights of persons belonging to ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities.

The Declaration is based on principles, such as to promote and encourage respect for human rights, fundamental freedom, equality of rights of man and women of minorities; to protect the ethic, cultural and religious identity of minorities; to encourage the participation in the public life; to enable persons belonging to minorities to express their characteristics and to develop their culture, language, religion, traditions and customs.
